Things to Do
Sacred Sites Tour: Goa Gajah, Gunung Kawi and Tirta Empul. This takes around 4-5
hours but is never more than 30 minutes from the villa. You explore the ancient Hindu sites with carved temples and monuments as well as the sacred bathing pools at Tirta
Empul. Entry fees are approx. $4 per person (total) including local guides.
Kintamani overlook: 4-5 hours. Drive to the crater rim of Mount Batur for a lunch with
a fantastic view. On the way back stop by one of the many coffee and spice plantations
to see how they grow their products. Visit terraced rice fields on the way back to the villa. Buffet lunch at the volcano costs approx. 70,000 Rupiah plus drinks.
Climbing Mt. Batur: 3:30am-11:30am Drive to the trail head and continue walking for
90 minutes uphill, just in time to see the sun rise over the volcanoes. It requires a small
flashlight, but they have them there is you don't. They can also serve up eggs boiled in
volcanic steam vents. A challenging workout but worth the energy...even if at 3:30am!!
Lake Bratan and Gitgit: 7-8 hours. Drive to Gitgit waterfall for a lovely walk down to
the waterfall viewing area and back again. You could stop at Pura Ulan Danau at Lake
Bratan on the way there or upon the return. Have lunch in Candi Kuning area before
checking out the Bedugul market and the botanical gardens. There is a Zip-Trek
Adventure within the botanical gardens that active folks might want to try.
Lake Bratan, Taman Ayun (floating Palace) and Tanah Lot (sunset temple). 8-9
hours. This is a wonderful trip to Lake Bratan, Pura Ulan Danau Bratan, the botanical garden, then down to the coast to see the famous Tanah Lot at sunset preceded by a
visit to the 'floating' temple which is surrounded by a moat. When filled with water the temple often appears to be floating. About $7 in entry fees including guide.
Shopping tour: Sukawati (local market) for paintings, mass production wood carvings,
endek textiles and other woven and carved objects; Celuk (silver smiths) and Mas (wood carving) high end masks and other work from master carvers. 4-5 hours
Uluwatu Temple and a seafood dinner at Jimberan Beach. 6+ hours. An afternoon
visit to see Uluwatu Temple ($2 entry fee for each of you) high on the cliffs of the Bukit
Peninsula. If you leave in the early afternoon you can see this temple then drive to
Jimberan to catch the sunset and a wonderful seafood dinner on the beach (about 100150,000 Rupiah each for the fresh seafood dinner).
Goa Lawah and Tenganan Village: 6-7 hours. Drive towards Candidasa stopping along the way at Goa Lawah (Bat Cave) before visiting the Bali Aga village of Tenganan (plus entry fees). Lunch in Candidasa overlooking the offshore islands before returning to the villa.
Snorkeling at Blue Lagoon or Tulamben: 8-9 hours. Drive 2-3 hours in early
morning to the snorkel site of choice. Snorkel for 90 minutes then drive to Tirta Gangga sacred spring for a cool fresh-water rinse-off. Have lunch in Candidasa and stop on the
way back at Goa Lawah (Bat Cave) before returning to the villa
Adventure tours we can arrange
River rafting: A 5-hour raft along the Ayung River. The cost is Rp350,000/person with Bahama Rafting (they provide transfer and lunch). It requires navigating some steep steps down to the river and back up again, but the river is quite tame yet fun. Our 4year
old loves it, as do our adult guests.
Elephant Safari Park at Taro: Riding elephants for 30 minutes in a rehabilitation center for Sumatran elephants. Recommended by the late Steve Irwin. Again, our kids loved this as they've never done anything else like it.
Downhill bike ride from the volcanoes: From Ubud to Kintamani by car and then back to Ubud via a downhill bike ride through villages and rice fields. Rp250,000
including lunch for the 6-hour adventure including transportation to the trail head in
Kintamani.
Tree-top canopy and zip-cord adventure: About $21 for adults and $14 for children (or 500,000 Rupiah for a family package of 2 adults and 2 children) plus transportation
to get there at about $33 per taxi for up to 7 people.
There are also many things to do in Ubud such as visiting the Monkey Forest, seeing some of the many nightly dance performances, visiting the many galleries and museums, sampling some of the many culinary options, plus some shopping at the
local market or the pantheon of other shops.
Please note that unless the transport is mentioned it is not included and the
pricing for car and driver to the sites is as follows (passenger capacity is listed
without luggage):
1-7 passenger SUV type vehicle 4-5hours Rp 300,000 8-9hours Rp 450,000
1-13 passenger van 4-5hours Rp450,000 8-9hours Rp600,000
